Essential Travel Information for Rwanda | Rwanda Travel Tips
Language: Rwanda’s official languages are Kinyarwanda, English, and French. English is widely spoken in tourism, business, and government, especially in Kigali and major tourist areas.
Currency: Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF) as its official currency. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and lodges, but cash is recommended for local markets, small businesses, and tips. ATMs are available in Kigali and larger towns.
Passport Validity: Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Rwanda and have at least one blank page for entry stamps.
Visa Requirements: U.S. citizens can obtain a tourist visa on arrival in Rwanda for stays up to 30 days. An online eVisa is also available. Proof of onward travel and accommodation may be required.
Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is highly recommended for Rwanda travel, especially for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, wildlife safaris, and adventure travel. Coverage should include medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and trip interruption.
Electrical System: Rwanda uses Type C and J plugs with a 230V / 50Hz electrical system. Travelers from the U.S. will need a plug adapter and possibly a voltage converter for electronic devices.
